Due Dates
A due date is a simple yet essential part of keeping track of tasks. It’s the day by which a task needs to be completed or delivered. Having a clear due date helps everyone stay on the same page, manage expectations, and keep projects on track.
Why Due Dates Matter
Setting a due date gives clarity—both for the person working on the task and anyone else relying on it. It ensures that nothing falls through the cracks and helps to prioritise work, so you can focus on what's most urgent without getting overwhelmed by a long to-do list.
When working in a team, due dates become even more important. Not only can you see when you need to complete your own tasks, but you can also see when others are expected to finish theirs. This visibility helps with planning and collaboration, as you can anticipate when dependencies will be completed and adjust your own work accordingly. Clear due dates help everyone stay aligned, avoid bottlenecks, and ensure that tasks are finished on time to keep the project moving forward.
How to Set Due Dates
When you’re setting due dates, it’s best to be realistic about how much time you’ll need. Give yourself enough time to do quality work, but don’t set the date too far into the future, as it can lead to procrastination. Also, consider other tasks you’re juggling and any potential obstacles that might come up along the way.
Setting a due date
There are multiple ways to set due dates:
When you create a task, you can add a due date.
Right-click on a task to change any attribute, including the due date.
Open a task and change the Due Date attribute.
Once you find the Due Date attribute, setting a due date is easy. Simply click on it, and a calendar picker will appear. Choose the date you want to set as the due date, and you're done!
Setting a date range
For some tasks, the due date isn't a single day but rather a range—meaning the task is expected to start and finish within a specific period. This is especially useful when the task spans multiple days or when a project has a window of time for completion. When setting a due date range, be sure to define both the start and end dates clearly so everyone knows when work is expected to begin and when it should be finished.
It can also be useful for events, such as setting a period when you're out of the office or have a planned trip.
Here's how to set a date range:
Click on the Due Date attribute to open the calendar picker.
In the bottom-right corner, click the 'Add Start Date' button.
Next, select a start date and then choose an end/due date.
Done!
After setting a due date or date range, the date(s) will be displayed on the task (card). You will also be able to sort and group tasks by due date.
